 The Brown Soul Project

The Brown Soul Project was founded by Robert Payne out of San Jose, California, on November 17, 2024. With both of his parents born in Texas, Robert was introduced to Tex-Mex music at an early age. Legends like Little Joe, Freddy Fender, and Ramón Ayala played a key role in shaping his musical roots.

Right out of high school, Robert played in a Little Joe tribute band. But by the year 2000, his path led him into the world of R&B, leaving Tex-Mex behind—at least for a while.

In early 2024, Robert felt a strong pull back to his musical roots. He knew it was time to reintroduce Tex-Mex to the Bay Area and beyond. Wasting no time, he handpicked seven talented musicians from across California and dove into rehearsals. Together, they began crafting a powerful setlist featuring music from icons like Selena, Stephanie Montiel, Shelly Lares, Little Joe, and more.

The Brown Soul Project continues to expand its catalog, bringing you a vibrant mix of Tex-Mex, Rancheras, Cumbias, Country, and good ol’ Rock and Roll.

We look forward to performing in your city and keeping the spirit of our Grandparents, Parents, Tíos and Tías alive through music.
